Bring May Flowers. I always interpreted that trite homily as meaning you have to wade through the crap, the unpleasant, the drab, to get to the good stuff and that phrase could quite easily apply to the process of gathering the elements of a vinyl record release. Today’s unpleasant task was critiquing the masters of every session we’ve recorded in preparation for sending them to the laquer cutter. I am so far out of my expertise that I might as well be on the moon. Add to that the stress of making sure everyone is happy with their individual representation on the record and I’m feeling in over my head. When there are so many variables, the process grinds to a halt. This is how projects die. This is how projects turn into should-have-beens and Might-Have-Beens and worst of all, just empty talk.

” Yeah, I was in a band, we didn’t really go anywhere, we got some sessions around somewhere. I wonder what ever happened to those things.”

Welcome to my worst nightmare.

Dash-In Show Wrap Up

The Elkys did not know what to expect when they agreed to play a show at Fort Wayne’s Dash In. While having enjoyed the sandwiches the downtown Fort Wayne eatery offers, they had never considered the business as a venue for a four piece band.

The front of the room was buzzing when the band arrived last Saturday night. A veritable army of Sweetwater folk were busily heaving gear, running cords and corralling amps. The scene was contained chaos and while space was tight, the bands on the roster were all able to tear down and set up with help from each other. The ladies were set up and ready to play in a jiffy, thanks to the kind Pouncer boys who shared their gear.

The stage was simply a ceramic tiled floor and the attendees pressed forward, eye to eye with the members of the band, lending an intimate viewing/performing atmosphere much like that of the band’s show at the venerable Cal’s bar in Chicago. The evening was completed by a set from House of Bread, capping a wonderful night full of new experiences and fun!

It’s a leading question. We hope you will say “I’m going to the Elky, Pouncer, HOB show, that’s what!” If you haven’t gotten a chance to check out Pouncer, now is the time. These four dudes just happen to pump out some of the catchiest power pop in the hood. The songs are about girls and love and relationships so they are a perfect fit for the Elkys! And House of Bread are hot off a collection of shows that promises to be tight and where-it’s-at! The Elkys play first at 10 pm, so get there early to chat with the girls and secure the best seat in the house.

Longtime Fort Wayne, Post-Rockish, Jam/Shoe/Dance greats, House of Bread, that’s who! Who else? Pop armada, Pouncer! The Elkys will be adding additional notches to their lipstick cases on March 2nd, that is Saturday, so no grumbling about another late night. This show is not to be missed. The dash-in offers an intimate setting to get up close and personal with your favorite bands and offers a wide selection of tasty cold beverages to drown your sorrows/feed your excitement/deaden your emotions with. The Elkys start the evening at 10 pm sharp, so be punctual!

Good news, due to a last minute scheduling conflict with self-described “outlaw troubadours” Against the Grain, the Elkys will find themselves sharing the stage with a permutation of Jana’s country pickin’ band, “Old and Dirty”. This time they are electrified and have a more rockin’ vibe. Don’t miss Electric Dirt! Rounding out the bill will be those rascally roustabouts, the Sour Mash Kats. The Show starts at 10pm and will cost you a mere 4 bux.

It has been the practice of the Elky Summers to record three songs every few months or so. This schedule has several benefits, the songs are chosen as snapshots in time of how the band is sounding, the band gets to experience the recording practices of a variety of different engineers and studio configurations. This gives everyone in the band an excellerated understanding of what is is like to be in a working band with set goals.

This also lends the works a patchwork quality, which is somewhat apt, given that quiltwork has been a traditionally female undertaking whereas rock-and-roll has been traditionally male dominated. The songs will be stitched together into a full length. Aside from mastering, little effort will be given to slavish matching of tones and subject matter. The album will operate as a scrapbook of distinct times representing the moments in time that make up the experience of being Elky.
